Looking for a home project to conquer the upcoming weekend? You know, those two days where think we can take care of all the items on our to-do lists, clean and organize our entire house, run errands, and still have time to binge-watch that Netflix series everyone’s been talking about. In reality, Saturday morning rolls around, and the couch becomes a little too inviting. But what if I told you that with a little planning (and maybe some good music), you can tackle any of these 10 organizing projects in just two days?
As a professional organizer, I know how rewarding it feels to check items off a list, especially when they make your home more organized, functional, and enjoyable. So, if you’re ready to transform your space and still have time for a Netflix marathon, here are 10 tasks that won’t take over your entire weekend.
1. Declutter Your Junk Drawer (Yes, Just One Drawer!)
We all have that one drawer – you know the one. It’s a black hole of takeout menus, random keys, and batteries of questionable origin. Give it some love this weekend! Start by emptying the contents onto a flat surface. Toss out anything that’s trash (bye-bye, dead batteries) and group like items together. If it doesn't belong in the drawer, find it a better home. Keep essentials, like a notepad, pens, and maybe a pair of scissors. Voilà – one small space, beautifully organized!
Pro Tip: Use drawer dividers or small containers to keep everything in its place.
2. Tame Your Tupperware (Because Lidless Chaos Is Real)
We’ve all had that frustrating moment of searching for a matching lid to a container that apparently evaporated. Tupperware drawers or cabinets have a sneaky way of turning into a plastic jungle, but you can fix that in under an hour.
First, pull everything out. Match lids to containers, and anything that doesn’t have a partner? It’s time to part ways. Stack your containers by size and neatly organize lids either in a vertical file holder or shallow bin.
Bonus: If you have the space, keep your containers and lids attached to each other and organize by size. No more searching for the right sized lid!
3. Organize Your Pantry
If you’ve ever bought a second jar of peanut butter because you couldn’t find the one hidden behind five boxes of cereal, it’s time to refresh your pantry. Start by pulling everything out (yes, everything), wiping down the shelves, and tossing expired items. Group similar foods together: cans with cans, snacks with snacks, and so on.
Want to take it a step further? Measure your shelves and buy an assortment of small, medium, and large bins to clearly store food in categories (pasta, bread, chips, etc.) Don’t forget about your cooking oils and plethora of sauces. We love to use Lazy Susan’s for organizing sauces and cooking oils.
Trust us, this small weekend project will make weekday meal planning so much smoother!
4. Create a “Drop Zone” (So Your Entryway Doesn’t Become a War Zone)
The front door is often a clutter magnet. Shoes, bags, keys, and mail tend to pile up here because, well, where else are you supposed to drop things when you walk in? Enter the “drop zone” – a designated space to keep everyday essentials in check.
Install hooks for keys, hats, and bags. Add a small bench or storage cabinet for shoes and maybe a basket or tray for mail. Now, every time you come home, you’ll have a functional (and attractive) spot to corral the chaos.
5. Declutter Your Closet
This one might take a little longer, but it’s worth it. Dedicate a few hours to go through your wardrobe and sort your clothes into three categories: keep, donate, and toss. Be honest with yourself – if you haven’t worn something in over a year and it’s not a special occasion item, it’s time to let it go.
Once you’ve narrowed things down, organize your clothes by type (shirts, pants, dresses) and color. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to find things when your closet isn’t bursting at the seams. Check out our blog post on tips to organize your closet and maximize your space!
Pro Tip: If you're feeling fancy, consider switching to matching hangers for an extra polished look.
6. Digital Detox: Clean Up Your Computer
Your digital life deserves some tidying too! Take a couple of hours this weekend to declutter your computer. Start by deleting unnecessary files, old downloads, and duplicates. Organize documents into folders and move anything important to an external hard drive or cloud storage.
While you’re at it, do a quick sweep of your inbox. Unsubscribe from those newsletters you never read and create folders for important emails. A clean digital space is just as satisfying as a tidy physical one!
7. Refresh Your Bathroom Cabinets
Are your bathroom cabinets overflowing with half-used bottles, expired medication, and stray cotton balls? Give them a little TLC this weekend. Empty the contents and sort through what you actually use. Toss anything that’s expired or not part of your daily routine.
Group items by category (haircare, skincare, etc.) and consider using bins or drawer organizers to keep everything in place. Not only will your cabinets look better, but getting ready in the morning will be a breeze.
8. Nightstand Declutter
Has your nightstand drawer transformed into junk drawer 2.0?! We’ve all been there. Bills, important documents, medicines, receipts, that book you are definitely going to start reading soon….Clutter can pile up quickly!
Dedicate 30 minutes to take all items out of your nightstand. Group them by category and toss anything that is trash. Relocate items that don’t belong in your nightstand to their proper homes. Keep only the essentials in/on your nightstand! The list will differ for everyone but think along the lines of phone charger, TV Remote, eye mask, hand cream, lip balm, sleep supplements, and that book you are definitely going to start reading soon.
9. Organize Your Linen Closet (No More Towel Avalanche)
Is your linen closet a game of Jenga waiting to happen? Towels, sheets, and random bedding can easily pile up into a chaotic mess. Set aside some time this weekend to give your linen closet a refresh. Start by pulling everything out and sorting through what you actually use. If you’ve got mismatched or worn-out linens, it’s time to donate or recycle them.
Fold towels and sheets neatly and stack them by category. Use labeled baskets or bins for smaller items like extra pillowcases, washcloths, or guest towels. Now, you’ll never have to dodge a falling towel when you open the door.
Pro Tip: Store the items you use most often at eye level for easy access.
10. Revamp Your Workspace
Whether you’re working from home or just need a place to pay bills, an organized workspace can do wonders for your productivity. Start by decluttering your desk: file away papers, toss out pens that don’t work, and get rid of any distractions.
Next, organize your supplies – keep the essentials within arm’s reach, and store anything you don’t use regularly in a drawer or cabinet. Add a touch of personality with a plant or framed photo, and you’ll actually want to sit down and work.
Wrap It Up
See? You don’t need to overhaul your entire house to feel more organized. By dedicating just a little time to these quick organizing tasks, you’ll start the next week with a clearer space and mind. Plus, once your home is more functional, you’ll have more time to enjoy those weekends guilt-free.
So, grab your coffee, put on your favorite playlist, and let’s get to work! You’ve got this – and who knows, maybe you’ll even inspire a new weekend tradition of tackling one project at a time. After all, who doesn’t love a little before-and-after magic?
