6 Tips to Organize Your Closet and Maximize Your Space

Is your closet bursting at the seams, leaving you to sift through piles of clothes and accessories every morning? An organized closet not only saves time but also reduces stress and can make getting dressed a more enjoyable experience. Here are six tips to help you transform your closet from chaos to calm:

1. Declutter First: Less Is More

Before you start organizing, it's crucial to declutter. Take everything out of your closet and assess each item. Ask yourself if you’ve worn it in the past year, if it still fits, and if it aligns with your current style. If not, it might be time to let it go. I know, I know. It’s tough, but let those faded, scratchy t-shirts go! Donate or sell items that are in good condition, and discard anything that’s worn out or damaged. This step will make it easier to see what you have and make better decisions about how to store it.

2. Categorize and Sort

Once you’ve decluttered, categorize your items. Group similar pieces together, such as pants, shirts, jackets, and accessories. You can go a step further, using The Detailed Life strategy, and sort within these categories by color and season. For example, organize your shirts by color to create a visually appealing rainbow effect. We also recommend grouping shirts by sleeve length (short sleeve vs long sleeve) for easier access.

3. Zone Plan

Yes, we’re still talking about closets! Although zone planning sounds like a sports strategy, it’s an immensely helpful organizational method for building a customized plan for your area. Zone planning is a method of organizing a space by dividing it into areas that serve specific functions. The purpose of closet zones is to eliminate extra time or steps when getting ready. Take your daily schedule and habits into consideration. Do you work in an office daily? Feature work wear items such as formal blouses on top and hanging formal pants and skirts on bottom. All your work clothing is one section and helps you avoid trekking across the closet when getting dressed!

4. Invest in Quality Storage Solutions

Further organize your zones by using products like slim space saving hangers, bins, boxes, baskets, and drawer dividers. Proper storage solutions can make all the difference with appearance and maximizing space! Updating your hangers is always the first step. Depending on your preference and aesthetic, we recommend using slim velvet or slim plastic hangers. Slim hangers are a closet essential! Use labeled bins or boxes to keep smaller like-items together. Seasonal items like swimsuits and winter accessories (i.e. scarves and hats) are great for bins. Are your purses and clutches slumped over on your closet shelves? Or worse…on the floor?! Use stackable, sectioned organizers to keep your clutches and purses upright, preserving their shape and making them easily accessible.

5. Optimize Your Vertical Space

If you have limited space, think vertically—utilize stackable shelving options that will double your storage. For example, we love folding fine knit sweaters into stackable drawers and adding them to closet shelves. This is a great way to free up hanging space. For shoes, utilize clear stackable shoe boxes. These can be stacked on shelves or even on the floor space beneath your clothes. Additionally, adding wall hooks or over-the-door organizers can help you make the most of every inch.

6. Maintain Regularly

An organized closet doesn’t stay that way on its own. Create healthy habits to ensure long-term success and organization. Set aside time periodically to reassess and reorganize. A quick weekly or monthly check can help you keep things tidy and ensure that everything is in its proper place. Implement a “one in, one out” rule to prevent future clutter—when you buy a new item, make sure to donate or discard an old one.

Bonus Tip: Personalize Your Space

Make your closet a space you enjoy spending time in. Add personal touches like a small mirror, decor, or a fresh coat of paint. Creating a pleasant environment can make the process of getting dressed feel more enjoyable and inspire you to keep things organized.

By following these tips, you can transform your closet into a well-organized space that makes getting dressed a breeze. Remember, organization is a continuous process, so stay proactive and enjoy the benefits of a clutter-free closet.
